Article Abstract:
The application of the [super.3.H]Leucine incorporation procedure for measuring bacterial production on decaying wetland plant litter is assessed by conducting substrate saturation experiments (nine concentrations, 10 nM to 50muM final leucine concentration) on three dates for microbial communities colonizing the submerged litter of three emergent plant species. The results reveal differential uptake by litter associated microbial assemblages, with the lower apparent [K.sub.m] values possibly representing bacterial uptake and higher apparent [K.sub.m] values representing a combination of both bacterial and nonbacterial uptake.

Article Abstract:
The impact of increased dessication on the osmoregulatory response of fungal decomposers inhabiting standing litter of the macrophyte Juncus effusus was investigated under field and laboratory conditions. The concentrations of osmolytes in fungal decomposers were negatively correlated with plant litter water potentials and rates of microbial respiration under field conditions. Results suggested that fungal inhabitants associated with standing litter of macrophytes can adjust their intracellular solute concentrations in response to daily fluctuations in water availability.
